Where Community Kindness Creates Second Chances

When Roger Davis opened the PAWS Charity Shop in 2014, operating from a modest factory space in Plettenberg Bay, few could have predicted just how significant the shop would become — not only as a thriving second-hand retailer, but as a critical source of funding for Plett Animal Welfare Service.

What began as a small initiative has steadily grown alongside the generosity of the Plett community. As donations increased and demand for affordable, quality goods continued to rise, the shop soon outgrew its original premises. This led to expansions into larger spaces and, eventually, the occupation of several factory units to accommodate the ever-growing volume of donated items.

Today, the PAWS Charity Shop is a destination in its own right. Shoppers are greeted with an impressive and constantly changing range of merchandise, all priced to be accessible and affordable. From clothing and furniture to kitchen appliances, books, artwork and household essentials, the shop offers something for everyone. Bargain hunters return regularly, knowing that no two visits are ever the same.

Support PAWS Charity Shop

Donate goods. Volunteer your time.

The PAWS Charity Shop relies on community donations and volunteers to keep its doors open and its impact growing. If you have items you no longer use — from clothing and furniture to appliances and household goods — consider donating them to the shop. Your unwanted items help fund vital care for animals in need. Volunteers are always welcome, and even a few hours of your time can make a meaningful difference.

Just some of the finds...

One of the shop’s most popular features is the well-known “Corner of Collectibles”, where unexpected treasures often appear. Over the years, the shop has even successfully sold high-value items such as a car and a boat, underscoring the remarkable variety of donations received and the trust placed in the shop by the community.

Beyond its retail success, the PAWS Charity Shop plays a vital role in sustaining animal welfare services across the greater Bitou area. Since its inception, income generated by the shop has made a substantial contribution to the operating expenses of Plett Animal Welfare Service, helping to fund essential primary healthcare services for needy dogs and cats. These funds directly support sterilisation programmes, medical treatment, rescue efforts and daily animal care.

“We are grateful to the Plett community for their generous donations, including entire households of goods. We would like to invite more volunteers to join us — it is great fun working in the shop. Call Sandra on 084 734 4545.”

The PAWS Charity Shop stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose. Every donated item, every volunteer hour and every purchase made contributes directly to improving the lives of animals who depend on PAWS for care and protection.

Meet the Team

At the heart of the shop’s success is a dedicated team led by Roger Davis, whose tireless commitment has helped shape the shop into what it is today. Known not only as the driving force behind the operation, Roger is also renowned for his ability to repair almost any broken appliance — ensuring that donated items are given a second life before reaching the shop floor.

The shop is managed by Sandra Lawrence, who is supported by Bheki Ntshuntshe, Alex Mlotshwa and Debbie Collins, along with a loyal team of energetic volunteers. Together, they manage sorting, repairs, pricing and customer service, creating a welcoming environment for shoppers and donors alike.
